Empty Orchestra
Empty Orchestra
Hosted by Angelica Vergel, Amanda McCleod.

Empty Orchestra explores the dynamic relationship between song and singer in the context of karaoke. Karaoke is that performative, vulnerable act that enables its participants to form a deeper, momentary connection with the music they love. When one karaokes, one becomes larger than the full sum of oneself and evolves into something more, bolstered and emboldened by the power of an audience, a microphone, and a moment on the stage. We will be exploring what exactly makes a great karaoke song, how we’ve overcome stage fright and embraced the duality of vulnerability and commanding power that comes with karaoke’s unique form of expression. We’ll be talking all time best songs, worst songs, best performances, best duets, best karaoke locations in the city and in Brooklyn, and even about the history of karaoke itself. Listeners are encouraged to call-in, request, and of course sing!

About Angelica Vergel, Amanda McCleod

Now this is a story all about how
Two girls got turnt and shit went down
We’d like to take a minute just sit right there
We’ll tell you how we grabbed the mics and let down our hair

One night on st mark’s we got turnt
Had to get off the streets before we got burnt
Ended up at karaoke it seemed kinda cool
Both of us were worried we’d look like fools

Just a couple of girls
Who were up to no good
Startin making music in a private room
Just took one little song
And we felt like stars
We said we’re spending every weekend in karaoke bars

The more we did it the more it became clear
Couldn’t stop thinking of tunes we wanted to hear
Get our hands on the mic and punch that code in
No matter what the score no way you don’t win

Pulled out all the stops and mastered our craft
Survivor, the Cure, Bonnie Tyler, Fleetwood Mac
Singin in the lab to perfect the formula
As the conductors of Empty Orchestra!
