Our resident expert on fun stuff Eli Raskin gives you highlights of things to do in Brooklyn and around the five boroughs this weekend.

Saturday

12pm – 1pm [Harlem]

Enjoy a stage reading of local Brooklyn artist Nick Gentile’s new play “Space Race.” Space Race is science-fiction and comedy in one easy-to-swallow tablet and reveals how man “actually” got to the Moon. Experience daring thrills as you hurtle through the terrifying void of endless space with a talented collection of New York City actors. This free to the public stage reading will occur 12pm, at the Harry Belafonte Library located at 203 W. 115th Street in Harlem.

12pm – 5pm [Bushwick]

Get a taste of some local vegan and cruelty-free goods and treats at the “Keep Your Cool! Vegan Shop-Up!” pop-up market. Shop over 20 local vendors selling everything from nail polish, to cinnamon buns, to (of course) tacos! Located at Pine Box Rock Shop which opens at 11am, the pop-up shop begins at 12pm and goes through 5pm. Admission is free for all, with anyone under 21 requiring a parent or guardian.

Sunday

2pm – 10pm [Bushwick]

Catch up, chill, eat some yummy food, and get daytime sexy, at Papi Juice’s annual BBQ and dance party celebrating queer and trans people of color. Come early for the daytime market, DJ’s, food by Yardy, and surprise guests at this free and funky meet and greet (21+) located at Elsewhere in Brooklyn.

7:30pm (7:00pm doors) [Gowanus]

A Brooklyn staple, make sure to check out the last iteration of “Sasheer Zamata’s party time” before Sasheer Zamata (of SNL fame) moves to LA! This variety show features stand-up sets by Wyatt Cenac, Emmy Blotnick, and Liza Treyger with music by Anya Marina and DJ Zephyr Ann. Final show bonus; free vegan snacks from vspot. Located at The Bell House in Gowanus, this show has a $10 cover charge.

Monday

7pm (doors) [Red Hook]

In the mid-70s, English experimental rock band This Heat perfected a strange and volatile new strain of avant-garde rock. 42 years after first gig in 1976, the two surviving members of the original band (Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward) come together with a large group of collaborators to play under the project title This is Not This Heat. Doors open at 7pm with DJ Nick Name performing at 8pm, Talibami! W/ Audrey Chen at 9pm and the main act starting at 10pm, Monday, July 23rd at Pioneer Works in Red Hook. All ages welcome with GA tickets starting at $30.
